2. The Present Continuous Tense
Kita sering mengungkapkan sesuatu yang sedang kita lakukan atau sesuatu itu sedang terjadi, baik ada hubungannya dengan kita ataupun tidak dalam kehidupan sehari-hari. Keberlangsungan peristiwa atau kegiatan SEDANG itu kita nyatakan dalam tense ini. Bukan hanya itu, penggunaan tense tersebut dalam konteks lain pun disajikan di bawah ini.
(+) S + be (am/is/are) + V1 + ing + O/Adv.
(-) S + be + not + V1 + ing + O/Adv.
(?) Be + S +V1 + ing + O/Adv.
Fungsi dan Contoh:
i. The Present Continous Tense untuk mengungkapkan kegiatan atau
keadaan yang sedang berlangsung pada saat sekarang.
- The doorbell is ringing.
- It is raining now.
- Why are you sitting at my desk?
- I am not wearing a coat as it isn’t cold.
- She is typing two letters now.
- Betty is sick. She’s lying in bed. She is not sleeping. Helen is looking out the window.
HELEN : I’m looking at yourfather. He is cooking hamburgers in the yard.
BETTY : Is Peter in the yard, too?
HELEN : Yes, he is. He’s playing with Alan.
BETTY : Can you see Elena?
HELEN : No, I can’t. Oh, wait a minute! Yes, I can. She‘s standing behind the bush.
BETTY : What’s she doing?
HELEN : She‘s laughing at the dog.
BETTY : What’s the dog doing?
HELEN : He’s barking at Tom. Tom has the dog’s stick.
BETTY : Where’s Luis? Is he playing, too?

Banyak
selebaran, flash card, ringkasan, buku kecil maupun buku-buku lainnya
yang memuat tatabahasa Bahasa Inggris yang menjelaskan tenses sebatas
pada uraian singkat, bahkan mungkin tanpa penjelasan apalagi
fungsi-fungsi, contoh-contoh dan evaluasinya. Oleh karena itu, tak
pelak lagi tulisan Living English Tenses ini merupakan salah satu
sumber referensi lengkap bagi mereka yang ingin menguasai dan
memperdalam keenam belas tenses Bahasa Inggris. Penulis yang berlatar
belakang dari SMA Negeri 1 Depok (1988) Jurusan Bahasa dan Budaya (A4)
dan IKIP Bandung (sekarang UPI Bandung) Jurusan Bahasa Inggris (1991)
menuangkan materi-materinya berdasarkan pengalaman-pengalaman menelaah
dan belajar-mengajar sebagai praktisi Bahasa Inggris di beberapa
sekolah baik SLTP, SLTA atau perguruan tinggi maupun lembaga-lembaga
informal kebahasaan.
Sementara pengalaman yang pernah
dipetiknya sewaktu di Lembaga Pendidikan Yayasan “Setia Negara” yaitu
Lokakarya Pemantapan Kurikulum 1994 Sekolah Menengah Kejuruan (14-15
Januari 1995), Pusdiklat LPIA, Zero Defect Quality (9-12 Juni 2003)
merupakan hal yang sangat membantu alur penulisan naskah yang mudah
dipahami bagi pembacanya. Contoh-contoh kalimat yang diberikan juga
cukup praktis yang merupakan petikan pengalaman karya komunikatif
