1. The
Simple Present Tense
Bentuk negative am not, is not, dan are not. Sedangkan bentuk interrogative (pertanyaan) dibuat dengan menempatkan kata kerja sebelum subyek: Am I….?, Is he…..?, Is she….?, Is it….?, Are you….?, Are we…..?, Are they……?, dan seterusnya. (peniadaan) dibuat dengan menambahkan kata setelah kata kerja tersebut:
Contracted forms (= bentuk-bentuk penyingkatan) yang biasanya terdapat dalam kalimat percakapan informalI am = I'm, you are = you're, we are = we're, they are = they're, he is = he's, she is = she's, it is = it's, is not = isn't, dan are not = aren't. Di dalam kalimat linking verb menghubungkan subyek dengan noun, adjective, adverb atau prepositional phrase of place sebagai complement (pelengkap penderita, penyerta, pelaku). Perhatikan perbedaannya di bawah ini:
I am a student. (student adalah jenis kata benda)
She is not stupid. (stupid adalah jenis kata sifat)
Are you still there? (there adalah jenis kata keterangan)
They are in the living room. (in the living room adalah frase kata kata depan menyatakan tempat)
Struktur kalimat lainnya menggunakan kata kerja utama (main verb) yang memiliki arti masing-masing, seperti: eat – (makan), eats, go – goes (pergi), play – plays (bermain / memainkan), speak – speaks (berbicara), dan sebagainya. Setelah subyek I, you, we, dan they diikuti kata kerja dasar: I eat, you eat, we eat, dan they eat, Toni and Teni eat, the teachers eat dan seterusnya, namun setelah subyek he, she, it diikuti kata kerja dasar ditambah partikel -s atau -es: he eats, she eats, it eats, Jane eats, the rabbit eats, dan seterusnya.
Kata bantu do untuk subyek: I, you, we, they, dan does untuk subyek: he, she, it digunakan dalam kalimat negative dan interrogative. Bentuk contracted (= penyingkatan ) do not = don't, dan does not = doesn't. Di dalam kalimat tertulis seperti berikut: I don't, you don't, we don't, they don't, he doesn't, she doesn't, it doesn't, do I ….?, do you ….?, do we....? do they ….?, do Dony and Kemal …..?, do Ita and her friends …..?, does he ….?, does she ….?, does it….?, does Devi …..?, does the crocodile ……?, dan seterusnya. Untuk diperhatikan, di dalam bentuk kalimat negative atau interrogative menggunakan kata kerja bentuk dasar (V1).
Dalam tense ini seringkali digunakan kata keterangan, seperti: always, (=selalu), often (=sering), usually (=biasanya), sometimes (=kadang-kadang), normally (=umumnya), seldom (=jarang), never (=tidak pernah), every … (=setiap …….) yang acapkali terdapat kalimat ini.
Pola kalimat
dengan Linking Verb (kata
kerja penghubung / verb be):
(+) S + linking verb (be: am / is / are) + O/Adv.
(-) S + linking verb (be: am / is / are) + not + O/Adv.
(?) Be + S + O/Adv.
Pola kalimat
dengan Main Verb (kata kerja
utama):

Tentang
Penulis
Banyak
selebaran, flash card,
ringkasan, buku kecil maupun buku-buku lainnya
yang memuat tatabahasa Bahasa Inggris yang menjelaskan tenses sebatas
pada uraian singkat, bahkan mungkin tanpa penjelasan apalagi
fungsi-fungsi, contoh-contoh dan evaluasinya. Oleh karena itu, tak
pelak lagi tulisan Living English
Tenses ini merupakan salah satu
sumber referensi lengkap bagi mereka yang ingin menguasai dan
memperdalam keenam belas tenses
Bahasa Inggris. Penulis yang berlatar
belakang dari SMA Negeri 1 Depok (1988) Jurusan Bahasa dan Budaya (A4)
dan IKIP Bandung (sekarang UPI Bandung) Jurusan Bahasa Inggris (1991)
menuangkan materi-materinya berdasarkan pengalaman-pengalaman menelaah
dan belajar-mengajar sebagai praktisi Bahasa Inggris di beberapa
sekolah baik SLTP, SLTA atau perguruan tinggi maupun lembaga-lembaga
informal kebahasaan.
Sementara pengalaman yang pernah
dipetiknya sewaktu di Lembaga Pendidikan Yayasan “Setia Negara” yaitu
Lokakarya Pemantapan Kurikulum 1994 Sekolah Menengah Kejuruan (14-15
Januari 1995), Pusdiklat LPIA, Zero
Defect Quality (9-12 Juni 2003)
merupakan hal yang sangat membantu alur penulisan naskah yang mudah
dipahami bagi pembacanya. Contoh-contoh kalimat yang diberikan juga
cukup praktis yang merupakan petikan pengalaman karya komunikatif
semasa masih sebagai Visa Section
Staff, Embassy of Japan at
Jakarta
(1994-1995), Personnel & General Affairs Staff, Nissho Iwai
Corporation in Jakarta Office (1995-2000), SMK Izzata, Wakasek
